Communications Specialist – Gender & Climate

As our Communications Specialist, you will play a key role in shaping and delivering our communications strategy for major events like the United Nations Climate Change Conferences (COP) and the Gender Just Climate Solutions Awards (GJCS). You’ll ensure that our advocacy reaches the right audiences, support the team with strategic messaging, and strengthen our media presence across platforms. 

This role requires expertise in high-level stakeholder engagement, media relations and digital communications, with a strong focus on climate and gender issues.  

 


Your Responsibilities 

  • Develop and implement communication strategies for COP, GJCS, and other key events, and coordinate these with the communications officers from our various offices (The Netherlands, France, Georgia, Germany).  
  • Lead the communication plan for the Gender & Climate team, ensuring strategic messaging and public engagement, and its alignment with the larger WECF branding. 
  • Provide conceptual and organizational support for events and campaigns, including press briefs, side-events and campaign launches, ensuring a strong public presence at large conference.  
  • Manage press relations, develop media strategies, and secure coverage in international outlets.  
  • Provide communications and media training and support to our advocacy staff.  
  • Support crisis and rapid response communication adapting information quickly in response to breaking news, negotiations or political shifts.  
  • Create compelling content, including articles, press releases, and social media posts and video storytelling.  
  • Coordinate translations and multilingual content and ensuring accessibility for diverse audiences.  
  • Build and maintain relationships with key media, press and partners like the Women and Gender Constiutency, and support the enhancement of WECFs press database.  
  • Analyze and improve communication efforts to enhance impact using data insights from digital analytic software.  
  • Contribute to branding, international communication, and fundraising efforts in collaboration with our global teams. Specifically, creating branded templates (social media posts, press releases, presentations) for future re-use for the Gender and Climate team.  

Who We’re Looking For 

  • Background in communications, journalism, media, or related fields. 
  • Experience in a communication role, ideally with knowledge of gender and climate issues, and decolonial, inclusive, intersectional and feminist communications approach.  
  • Strong media network and editorial experience, including working with journalists and writing for press. 
  • NGO experience and fundraising skills are a plus. 
  • Expertise in digital media strategies, including social media management and analytics. 
  • Fluent in English (additional languages are an asset, specifically Spanish, Portuguese, French or German). 
  • Technical skills in design, content creation using tools like Canva, WordPress/website editing, photo and video editing, and content management tools. 
  • Photography and videography are a plus.  
  • Strong networking abilities to maintain relationships with key partners and stakeholders. 
  • Strategic thinker with an eye for compelling media stories and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
