What we do
How can a green and digital – twin – transition in Europe be fair and inclusive? This is the focus of the Horizon Europe project FITTER-EU (Fair and inclusive twin transitions for a stronger social Europe) since February 2024. The project explores the opportunities offered by a green and digital twin transition to improve social justice and the well-being for all. It focuses on the extent to which the two aspects – green and digital – can mutually condition, strengthen and weaken each other.
The core of the project is the development of the FITTER EU ecosystem, which will include an interactive and playful digital platform supported by an intelligent predictive decision support system. Using a co-creation methodological approach, it will be possible to simulate planned policies and predict which social groups will be affected by the dual change measures under different scenarios. The results will help the FITTER EU Cluster Community Group of Stakeholders (CCGS) to identify measures that are fair and feasible for all stakeholders. The CCGS includes key pan-European members such as policy makers, civil society organisations, including trade unions and business angels, and other target groups.
We at WECF are primarily responsible for research in Germany. The research covers the issue of definitions and methodologies in the fields of Just Transition and Twin Transition. We contribute to the mapping of vulnerabilities and risks in the three dimensions of labour market, financial resources and skills as well as in the four sectors of energy, transport, housing and construction, food and agriculture. Intersectional inequalities are always at the centre of our analysis.
Our research aims to contribute to existing research on the origins and dynamics of inequalities and to identify the factors that marginalise and keep certain groups of people in inequality. The results should serve as forecasts for political decision-making processes at European and national level, so that intersectional risks and realities of life can be considered and addressed with foresight when developing political frameworks.
