#PlasticHealthCoalition

FEBRUARY 06, 2019 | IN CAMPAIGN | BY ADMINWECF

The potential negative health effects of plastics are a major cause for concern. Not just for us, but for an increasing number of scientists and organizations as well.  The Plastic Soup Foundation therefore initiated the Plastic Health Coalition and asked WECF to become a member of this international coalition.

Together we’re working on more research, prevention, and solutions, with eachorganization contributing from its own expertise.  WECF, Women Engage for a Common Future, a non-profit network dedicated to gender justice and a healthy planet for all found it important to join the coalition and contribute to the mission of the coalition: answering the question “Does plastic make us sick?”

WECF has been working on chemicals & health related issues since its beginning in 1994 and advocates for non-chemical alternatives worldwide, based on three principles: polluter pays, reversal of the burden of proof and the precautionary principle. Plastics have always been an important topic for WECF; they contain many hazardous substances and contribute significantly to waste, which has significant impacts on both men and women’s health.

There is strong evidence that our bodies are at stake —that people are exposed to plastics and their additives every day in a variety of ways. We already know that many additives in plastic are considered extremely harmful, but there is no complete understanding of the effects of plastic itself on human health yet. By joining the Plastic Health Coalition, WECF hopes to facilitate and support the process of filling essential knowledge gaps regarding plastics and health.
