Our successful workshop on water and microplastics in Zlatibor, Western Serbia!
We are delighted that 45 pupils and 11 teachers took part in our two-day workshop on water safety and microplastics in Serbia. The event took place on 26th and 27th September at a school in Zlatibor, Western Serbia. The workshops were organised together with our partner organisation EASD as part of our WSSP project, which involves five countries in the Balkan region to raise awareness of water and microplastic issues.
The workshop was divided into two parts, and spread over two days.
The first part was a ‘train the trainers’: we informed local teachers about water safety planning methods that the WSSP team developed over the course of the project, and which can be integrated into the curriculum. The methods and tools deal in detail with the question of how schools can teach content on microplastics and water pollution, sanitation and hygiene and menstruation.
On the second day, we demonstrated how what we had taught the teachers on the first day could be put into practice. We presented a large group of 6th and 7th grade students with numerous activities to discover the world of water and microplastics. Among other things, they learnt interesting facts about the production of plastic, and tested water from various local sources for its nitrate content and microplastics.
Our team consisted of an expert on microplastics and chemicals, two WECF colleagues, and a representative of our partner organisation EASD. Together, we considered the two workshops a complete success. The enthusiasm and interest of our participants was confirmed by their many questions, smiles and laughter, proving that our methods for imparting knowledge were well received. We look forward to more successful workshops in the future!
