Our COP29 Priorities

Our WECF delegation is just returning from the Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Cali and now we are gearing up for the Climate Conference (COP29) in Baku, in Azerbaijan from 11 to 22 november. This year’s climate conference will be a crucial one for delivering on climate finance, but perhaps less known is that it is also an important year for the gender negotiations.

While the climate crisis impacts everybody, everywhere, it doesn’t do so equally. Women and girls in all their diversity, specifically in the Global South, are the ones that are hit first and hardest by climate change. However, they are sparsely involved in climate decision-making spaces and their solutions remain underrecognized and underfunded. It is high time that the richest countries pay their fair share, stop investing in fossil fuels and false solutions and move that money to just climate solutions.

COPs do not take place in a vacuum, and are shaped by the context of the location in which it is being held. We know that civic space is shrinking in the South Caucasus and critical voices are being silenced, requiring our solidarity as we have the privilege to enter the COP space.

At COP29 we will be following several negotiation streams with an ecofeminist lens, whilst putting a spotlight on gender just solutions to the climate crisis together with our partners.
