Nitrate pollution of bodies of water in the Balkan region

Nitrate is essential for plant growth. However, too much of it can have  severe consequences for both human health and local ecosystems. For our Water, Sanitation and Safety Planning (WSSP) project, a workshop was held in which pupils, students and teachers tested various water sources for their nitrate concentration. The participants gained an understanding of the level of pollution in neighbouring surface water and learned interesting facts about water protection.

In this report, we analyse the informal data collected together with the participants. Moreover, we examine the wider problem of nitrate pollution, provide possible solutions and identify research gaps.
