New report from Western Balkans & Turkey on the future of equality

Our feminist colleagues involved in the virtual consultation on Generation Equality in Western Balkans & Turkey (WBT), led by Women’s Platform for Development in Serbia, has released a policy report on the future of equality. Read it in full here.

Women’s rights advocates from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey  gathered virtually to discuss new pathways to gender equality and call for urgent action under a series of online meetings during September 2020.

Some of the recommendations coming out of the meeting and the report includes

  • Increase allocations for CSOs working in the field of combating gender-based violence
  • Support the implementation of the Istanbul Convention.
  • Establish safe and easily available on-line consultations for Roma women and girls, rural women and girls, women and girls with disabilities and all other women and girls so that they can access help and support regarding GBV even when mobility is reduced as a result of crises such as COVID-19.
  • Governments and judiciary in WBT ought to ensure a much stronger protection of labor rights
  • Governments in WBT countries need to harmonize laws and programmes on sexual and reproductive health and rights
  • There is a need for reclaiming ecofeminism, there is not much of its mobilization in WBT sub-region
  • Generation Z can be the driver of change for feminist movement-building in the region
