Inclusivity Food Systems Analysis

About the paper

The Inclusivity Food System Analysis reviews women and youth engagement and position in the food value chain in the eight INCiTiS- FOOD Living Lab cities. The aim of this working paper is to fill some of the gender-specific research gaps identified following the Food Systems Analysis (FSA) conducted by Wageningen Research, resulting in recommendations to the LLs and other consortium partners on adopting gender-responsive approaches in specific cities. These are meant to illustrate the context in which the Living Labs operate, and highlight significant weaknesses and leverage points to support efforts of meaningful inclusion in the INCiTiS-FOOD Living Labs.
The research was done based on 3 indicators:
  1. Women and Youth Decision-Making Power in the Food Value Chain;
  2. Women and Youth Access to and Control of Resources for Business in the Food System;
  3. Women’s Health and Nutrition at a Domestic Level Based on Food Consumption.

Key recommendations

Despite the unique city needs, common steps to support women and youth in urban food systems include:
  • Address structural inequalities in food systems that exclude women and youth.
  • Support leadership and access to resources for women and young people (e.g. land, credit, training).
  • Encourage inclusive policy-making and cross-sector collaboration, ensuring marginalised voices are heard.
  • Improve training, extension services, and education tailored to the needs of women and youth.
  • Ensure that inclusion efforts do not increase burdens, especially on women (e.g. unpaid care work).
