Watch Our Webinar: How to Celebrate the Holidays Without Fast Fashion
New Year’s Eve celebrations are coming up, and many people are thinking about buying something new to wear. But how can we celebrate and still care for the planet? On 4 December, WECF organised a 45-minute webinar on fast fashion as part of the ICJF webinar series, focused on more sustainable choices during the holiday season.
The webinar was moderated by Clara Presman, who opened the session with two short questions for the audience about fast fashion. Participants shared their thoughts in the chat using words and emojis. Many people mentioned problems such as waste, pollution, and unfair working conditions.
Two inspiring speakers shared their knowledge and ideas. Emily Macintosh from the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) explained why the fast fashion industry causes serious environmental and social harm. She spoke about pollution, toxic chemicals, and growing textile waste, and explained how EU policies like the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) aim to make fashion more sustainable.
The second speaker was Abby French, also known as @sustainablefashionfriend. She is a sustainable fashion influencer who prefers to call herself a “de-influencer”. Abby showed how big brands use marketing to make people buy more clothes, often by creating fear of missing out (FOMO). She also shared easy tips to reduce overconsumption, such as unfollowing social media accounts that create pressure to always buy the latest fashion.
With New Year’s Eve and other celebrations ahead, the webinar offers practical inspiration to stay stylish while being kind to the planet. The recording is available on our YouTube channel.
Our next webinar, on a gender-just energy transition and energy poverty with many tips to keep you warm, will take place Thursday January 29 at 1pm CET.
