HLPF 2025 official offside side event – 16 July 2025 – IN-PERSON EVENT ONLY, LIMITED SPACES
30 years since the ambitious ‘Beijing Platform for Action’ and 10 years since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, progress on SDG5 is stagnating. Inequalities are growing, authoritarian governments are rising and women’s rights are being rolled back. It is out of this worrying reality that the consortium WomenPower2030 was created. It is high time we build a world where women, girls and gender-diverse people can thrive – not just adapt to broken systems. In this dynamic side event, spotlighting SDG 5, we aim to map what is needed to successfully implement, accelerate and transform action for gender equality. We will look into questions such as: what is prohibiting us from reaching the current targets under SDG5 (implementation), what support for feminist and women’s rights organisations is needed to speed up progress (acceleration) and how can we address the root causes of inequality in a more systematic way, envisioning a path beyond Agenda2030 (transformation).Decision-makers, civil society actors, philanthropy and UN allies committed to advancing action under SDG5 are encouraged to participate. In this interactive format, participants of the world cafe roundtables will build on the short introductory good practices from feminist organisations to identify obstacles and co-create actionable recommendations to further implement, accelerate and transform action on gender equality.
This event is organised by WomenPower2030 partners: Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF International), Asia Pacific Forum on Women Law and Development (APWLD), Fundación para Estudio e Investigación de la Mujer (FEIM), The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), Women Environmental Programme (WEP) and is supported by: ARGO Network Central Asia, Women’s Major Group, Feminist Action for Climate Justice Action Coalition convened by UN Women.
