Decarbonization pathways are globally connected and decisions for a just transition in the Global North impacts just transitions in Global South countries. This event draws from a recent study on nickel production in Indonesia and its impacts on local communities and gender equality. It will also introduce experiences from the IKI project women-led decarbonization initiatives which uses feminist participatory action research to base local decarbonization initiatives on local women’s needs.
To emphasize the interconnectedness of feminist approaches, the discussion will also touch on how just transition efforts intersect with ecosystem protection and biodiversity, reflecting linkages across the Rio Conventions. The event will also comment on the gender action plan negotiations to connect the UNFCCC decisions to real impacts on the ground. We strive for inviting speakers from at least one more region to discuss local experiences of extractivist industries on gender equality and local initiatives that translate feminists demands into climate action.
