Current State of Gender in the Energy Sector in Albania
This report provides a comprehensive analysis of gender aspects in the Albanian energy sector and explores the potential for a gender- and socially inclusive transformation. It draws on insights from an extensive survey of stakeholders at various levels, including energy agencies, utility companies, NGOs, and others. As a result, the report offers a detailed overview of the current challenges and future opportunities in Albania.
The Albanian energy sector relies heavily on hydropower, which accounts for around 90% of electricity generation. However, the sector faces significant challenges, primarily due to water scarcity caused by climate change. Despite these challenges, gender-specific considerations are often overlooked in national energy policy, as women represent only about 27% of the workforce. To ensure sustainability and security, Albania must diversify its energy sources to include solar and wind energy—while adopting a gender-sensitive approach.
