Aleksandra Mladenovic (Environmental Ambassadors for Sustainable Development) delivered a combined statement on behalf of the Women’s Major Group, on Serbia’s Voluntary National Review (VNR), at the 18th meeting, during the HLPF, held in New York, on 17th July 2019.

The waste and chemical sectors contribute significantly to climate change, and to a high burden of disease due to toxic emissions. The technical approaches in addressing these challenges overlook the social and gender dimensions, and how women’s leadership can boost the transition to non-toxic and low-carbon societies. We therefore hosted a side event in parallel to HLPF to present the results of case studies in Africa, Asia and Latin America conducted for the BRS Conventions (see video above). In addition, our women2030 partners spoke at several side events. E.g. Colette was one of the main speakers on Women’s Major group official side event. Sascha Gabizon also participated in the launch of the SDGWatchEurope publication “who is paying the bill“, while Hanna Gunnarsson shared lessons learned from the regional civil society engagement mechanism during a side event on regional mobilisations and at the Major Group & Other Stakeholders strategy meeting.
Meeting with delegations
HLPF is a great space for having bilaterals with UN bodies and representatives from Member States. Together with other members of the Women’s Major Group and our women2030 partners, we meet New Presidents of UNEA and UN Environment and the Swedish delegation. As the regional organising partner for Women’s Major Group, we also facilitated a civil society meeting with the UNECE executive secretary, Olga Algayerova, and its secretariat.
Social media
This has been the most impactful campaigning we have done so far collectively! This year we reached 5 million people and made 42 million impressions together, just on Twitter! Last year we reached 3.7 million people and made 26,6 million impressions. Besides an impressive social media presence, the members of the Women’s Major Group were heard loud and clear throughout the High Level Political Forum on sustainable development.
