Imagining a Climate Just Future – Reflections from a Day of Ideas and Action

On 8 October 2025, the “Imagining a Climate Just Future” conference took place at the DesignLab, University of Twente in the Netherlands. The one-day event was co-organised by the University of Twente and Women Engage for a Common Future (WECF), and was one of the highlights of Sustainability Week 2025.

The conference brought together students, researchers, professionals, and members of the public to share ideas about how we can make climate action fairer and more inclusive. It focused on rethinking education, work, and leadership so that climate policies and solutions benefit everyone.

A key aim of the day was to raise awareness about ecofeminism – the idea that climate justice and gender equality are deeply connected. Speakers and participants explored how gender perspectives can be better included in the European Green Deal, and how ecofeminist approaches can help build stronger, more equal climate movements.

The programme included keynotes, panel discussions, workshops, and a Climate Café, where participants could play and learn about climate decision-making. Topics discussed during the day included:

  • The European Green Deal seen through an ecofeminist lens.
  • The role of artificial intelligence (AI) in climate action and education.
  • The effects of pesticides on health and the environment in the Twente region.
  • How to create a fair and inclusive vision for the future.

The event encouraged open discussion, creativity, and collaboration. Participants shared ideas on how we can work together to make climate policies more just and sustainable – locally, in Europe, and beyond.

The day ended with a sense of shared purpose: that real change is possible when people come together across sectors and generations to imagine and build a better future.

“Your voice matters. Together, we are shaping new ideas and solutions for a climate-just world.”
