About event: The Global North, specifically many countries in our UNECE region, have long ignored the worldwide impacts of their carbon emissions, weapon sales, extraction of natural resources and human resources from the Global South. With the intersecting and multiple excruciating crises our world faces, Global North countries can no longer ignore the impacts of their actions as these impacts have started to emerge in the Global North countries now too. E.g. through hurricanes, wars “next door”, fear of nuclear war, food insecurity, and high inflation. We, the civil society of the UNECE region, are calling on all the governments in the Global North to stop ignoring the impacts of their actions and omissions. To start stepping up to their responsibilities for the wellbeing of the people and the planet. We hope this side event, rather than just being critical and pessimistic, can show good practices and efforts. Listening to the needs of the people from the Global South, and the solidarity exhibited by organisations in the Global North who are holding their governments accountable and amplifying the voices from the Global South.

In solidarity,
ECE – Regional Civil society Engagement Mechanism
